u/AJDonahugh Mar 31 '23
Very efficient for sure. Anybody have a fundraiser for thermals for Ukrainians?

Here you are: https://prytulafoundation.org/en/help-army/direction/optika-dlya-vijska
This is one of the most trustworthy UA charity foundation

Constantine, a former Ukrainian army officer, regularly does fundraisers for thermal equipped drones https://twitter.com/Teoyaomiquu/status/1637872269904019456?s=20

I read that in combat like the trench warfare and urban fighting among the destroyed buildings in Bakhmut, the ratio is several thousand rounds per kill. Snipers are economical indeed.

u/Manch3st3rIsR3d Mar 31 '23
Bakhmut is a snipers dreamland...good lord that's horrifying to think about. Stalingrad v2.0
57
35
u/get-memed-kiddo Mar 31 '23
Yep. Although the Russians occupy something like 65% of Bakhmut as of yesterday, the Ukrainians still control most of the tall apartment blocks, overlooking large open spaces that the Russians have to cross

u/mnbga Mar 31 '23
Fucking hell, that’s world record numbers. Why is it always Russians getting killed in the hundreds by snipers? You think they’d learn.
23
u/Kavalkasutajamini Mar 31 '23
we had a ama from a soldier who had enough of killing, said nobody asked how may they wacked in a day and about ukraine casualties they werent allowed to comment, so that probably means nothing good for ukraine also. at least ukrainians have something to die for, not like russians who are just like ok putin is crazy? sure i will die for that...
20
u/DigitalParacosm Mar 31 '23
so that probably means nothing good for ukraine also
That’s one hell of an assumption.
I can think of a few good reasons not to reason kill/death ratios vs. Russia, one of which is that Russia is sending men to their death, so that information being public can only help their cause.
How would it help Ukraine if Russia knew exactly how many Ruski bodies it took to create a traffic jam?
12
u/SireBobRoss Mar 31 '23
This sub very much seems to think that the Ukrainian kill to death ratio is much higher than it probably is in reality. This is most likely due to the fact that you only really see Ukrainian POV videos on this subreddit. I’d imagine in reality that Ukrainian casualties are much closer to the Russians than you’d think

u/neededanother Apr 01 '23
Probably high, but not as bad as Russians otherwise they would be scrambling for recruits like Russia. I’m not on the ground there but haven’t heard anything about that

so sad your google account was banned

u/AZMane Apr 01 '23
Dumb if you think a simple Google search will reveal how many dead bodies are laying in ukraine....

u/DerGrummler Apr 01 '23
They are similar videos on telegram where Russian snipers take down Ukrainian soldiers. The Ukrainians are currently losing Bachmut. Really slowly, but losing nonetheless. Everything you see in this subreddit happens in reverse as well.
Bachmut is primarily a giant meat grinder.

Guessing whatever plate these sorry bastards are wearing is not something rated to stop a snipers bullet. It may have hit plate, but in their case it probably just means additional shit going into their chest cavity.

51
u/jondubb Mar 31 '23
Helps when the enemy command does not care about their troops. I can only imagine the drsperate radio calls to their CO.
"We are getting wiped out by snipers we need an airstrike and armored support!!!!"
"...Just lay low and fire back. Good luck, viva Putin."
1
u/Toddison_McCray Apr 01 '23
Night vision optics was a complete game changer. The kill counts from WW2 are usually greatly inflated, but after night optics began to be widely used I can absolutely see why some US snipers forgot their kill counts.

I'm not sure if it's blood or the round ricocheting through the guy's body on the debris behind.
Edit: Insane footage though.

u/Hami_Foods Mar 31 '23
I'm pretty sure that's dude's blood. I don't think a round could go through the body and then hit the debris hard enough to shatter into the cloud we see for one frame.

I watched a breakdown earlier today that talked about there being 6,000 of the initial 60,000 Wagner recruits left in the area. Russia working hard to lower those domestic incarceration rates!

ISW said 6,000 wagner soldiers and around 20,000 wagner prisoner recruits are left. Less than half of what they started with.

God damn, dudes a great shot. Based off flight time, I'm guessing 250ish meters. Shooting moving targets at that distance takes practice. This ain't this cowboys first rodeo.
5
u/climbercgy Mar 31 '23
Do those rounds typically go through armor?
5
u/throwawayyy8191 Mar 31 '23
It depends on what bullet and what body armor, but yes they’ll go through a lot of body armor, since most is only rated to stop up until either 5.45 or 7.62x39
9
u/DarkVoid42 Mar 31 '23
sniper rifles will go through armor and blow your limbs off.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Stealsack Apr 01 '23
It's hard to say what the russians are rolling with, but here in the US we have plate ratings. NIJ level III will stop 308, and level IV will stop armor piercing 30 cal. bullets.

Question for people who used thermals, are they that “laggy” in real life or is it just the recording?
→ More replies (3)23
u/_zenith Mar 31 '23
They are that laggy.
Think about it in photography terms. If there is low light, you need a long shutter time. This naturally limits what frame rate you can get. If you want a high frame rate you either need more light (with thermal this can be infrared light of course), or be prepared to deal with a lower contrast and more noisy image.
You can also have a large lens to alleviate this, but no sniper wants to carry around a big fragile piece of glass!

6
u/247stonerbro Mar 31 '23

→ More replies (1)3
u/Eatpoopgofish Mar 31 '23
Thermal vision/IR optics/night vision is extremely OP in actual warfare. Basically in warfare like this you have to keep constant pressure, and if they are entrenched you still have keep pressure otherwise you get overrun with counterattacks.
6
u/LithoMake Mar 31 '23
Rubble is not easy to walk on. Probably exhausted and scrambling, in the dark.
17
u/TransitionNew1255 Mar 31 '23
If I learned one thing from this war, it’s that Eastern Europeans have terrible taste in music
18
u/XanLV Mar 31 '23
Now, before you accuse me of defending this music... I am defending this music.
This is no different than US blues/country music. Sure, now they're full of instruments and backvocals, but originally it is just a man with a guitar.
The style is "chanson " which are literally prison songs. They started as prison songs under Tsar, they were gulag counter-culture songs in Soviet times when the whole population was institutionalized. Many in death camps, many deported to Siberia, the rest by just having to live there. That is why the music is so simple - you got no violins out there. And that is why it's always sad and dealing with despair. And there is a lot of code so that prison guards don't know what's up.
There was one singer, Krug, who started singing these prison songs in front of the Russian elite and got shot because of that. They are sort of holy in a way.
I 100% understand how it might seem bad music, but it is one of those times when a few notes mean a whole lot to people who understand what's going on there.
1
u/TransitionNew1255 Mar 31 '23
Thanks for the explanation, I wasn’t really picking on this song in particular, more just making a joke about how pretty much every video is set to music. I agree though this is far from the worst song I’ve heard, you guys probably think the same thing when we roll around to Ice-Cube.
9
u/XanLV Mar 31 '23
Yeah I get it, that is a thing with these songs.
There is one VERY annoying that goes "Vaņka Staņka" and absolutely insanely annoying. But it is actually a funny as fuck song, considering that the lyrics are, not a direct translation, but: "Shit, boy?! How you got here? Oh my, who knows. Get up. Why don't you get up? Awwww, what happened? Found a grenade? Aww. Vaņka, Staņ-ka. (Vaņka (name), get up!) Well, sure, you can run in the forest, just for fun..."
So yeah, it is very often a very annoying song that actually is rough as fuck. For example, in this song the man talks about the fact that he has entered the church and doubts that God will ever be able to forgive him. And this is at a video where we see a sniper mentally fucking himself up by just having to delete folk. (Sure, maybe he will go unscathed, but you know - church will make him think, regardless that he is right.)
On another note (ba-dum-tss) Ice-Cube is cute and all, but Red Ants, Clipping, Aesop Rock and Tonedeff is where it's at.

Me being the noob that I am, what percentage of this is skill and what other percentage is it equipment/luck?. For example like how hard would you say it is to hit thise shots lol.
3
u/nautilius87 Mar 31 '23
Thermal scope is very laggy, so it takes skill and knowledge of the weapon. You can see that he doesn't aim moving targets directly. His hands are steady, aiming fast, moves precise. What certainly helped him is the fact that Russians were completely clueless (some literally go exactly in steps of a soldier killed two seconds earlier, what did they think would happen).
-1
u/BearSausage000 Mar 31 '23
Not hard to hit these, as long as your arms work anyone could hit these. Especially in the thermal I got, this snipe is prolly using a stand or going prone too, but yeah this is more optic doing the work for ya.

Nice shooting. I wonder if this is a remotely crewed weapon. Some of the tracking seemed to be mechanical as in very straight angles. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is a “crow” system from the us military. Crew remotely operated weapon.
6
u/Aromatic_Balls Mar 31 '23
Nah definitely just an advanced thermal scope and a skilled marksman. CROWS is super heavy. There's a reason it's only seen on vehicles and ships and the occasional tower for defending bases.
3
u/LoneSnark Mar 31 '23
My God that would be amazing...can they make those small enough for one person to carry in a backpack? Set it up on one side of the building, the actual sniper is on the opposite side away from the front and any returned fire, even artillery.

I feel like this is less a case of sniper skill and more that scope being God tier. It does ALL THE WORK.
19
u/koos_die_doos Mar 31 '23
Have you ever shot an actual rifle at 200+ yards? The scope helps a lot, but he’s still doing everything else that delivers the round on target.
-13
u/AlexTheRockstar Mar 31 '23
Mate the moment that crosshair toggles dark it means pull the trigger. No math, no windage, no bullet drop calculation, it's all done for you.
13
u/LithoMake Mar 31 '23
The moment the cross hair toggles dark it means the background is white. That's it, that's all it means.
17
u/TheGman81 Mar 31 '23
The crosshair going dark isn't some "Shoot now" indicator. The crosshair changes to contrast the background it's sighted against so it stays visible.
I'm sure an advanced scope like that has a built in rangefinder, but he's leading the targets and accounting for bullet drop in his shooting.
7
u/LithoMake Mar 31 '23
And they're steady as fuck... looks like an aim bot. No weeble wobbling at all.

-8
u/AlexTheRockstar Mar 31 '23
I'm not downplaying the man's talent, but give him a standard 10x NVG scope and I can't see him hitting that accurately. Or anyone for that matter.
16
4
2
u/Toddison_McCray Apr 01 '23
Have you ever shot a gun at long ranges before? I ask, because if you have, you’ll know how it can be difficult to keep your gun accurate if you’re shooting for long periods of time. Scope mounts come loose. Things get shoot around, you start to get fatigued. It’s hard to stay this accurate at range. Then add in the fact that you’re shooting another man in a war zone, and if you start missing they’ll know they’re taking fire and start alerting others.
You’re absolutely trying to downplay his talent.

u/koos_die_doos Mar 31 '23
Funny considering how many shots are fired when the crosshairs are light.
7
u/fanglord Mar 31 '23
It gives you a colossal advantage for sure if the enemy lacks thermal imaging or is in disarray; but it doesn't take away the skill needed to actually get a bullet on target or eliminate enemies in a way that doesn't get yourself killed.

Thermal scope against enemies without night vision is a slaughter.
