u/Rural-Camphost Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23
I was right there with him! From Colorado, and no visitors seem to realize that honestly, moose are more dangerous than the bears. Maybe because people think they’re cute and pull shit like this when they would not do this to a bear. I honestly hope I get a part two. Edit: would NOT do this to a bear
79
u/AffectionateCable793 Apr 01 '23
Bears are afraid of moose. Saw a video of a moose chasing a bear. Bear got so scared it ran into a sign post.

u/IridiumPony Apr 01 '23
I've lived in both CO and WY. Am here to confirm that moose are 8ft tall murder machines.
73
u/Rural-Camphost Apr 01 '23
Right?! Way more aggressive than any bear , or honestly even mountain lion that I have physically encountered .

u/HighJoeponics Apr 01 '23
Bears want to eat or protect their cubs, moose will just lash out. Definitely a wild card vibe to a moose.
82
u/CedarWolf Apr 01 '23
Moose are big and they have a lot of mass, and they can move that mass. They're powerhouses who can run at up to 35 mph. They can run through chest high snow, they can run through saplings and brush, and they can sure as Hell outrun you and trample and stomp and kill your ass if they decide they want to.
That's why all of us who know are sitting here, watching this video, expecting to watch this moose fuck up a pair of drunken fools. It's karma.
30
u/HighJoeponics Apr 01 '23
I’m 32, I only learned this like 4 or 5 years ago because of the internet. Fucking Disney, man!! Also a mule deer with a full rack can basically sprint through brush without losing almost any speed. A moose is a fucking tank

New England checking in. Moose are the most dangerous animal in the region—and our Coyotes are 85-100 lbs. Bears rarely even attack them, because of how massive and strong they are.
Idk why anyone would feel this brave around an animal that stands 8’ AT THEIR SHOULDERS. These dudes were lucky it wasn’t rutting season, because they would be a maniacal bull tracking that female.
5
u/patchgrabber Apr 01 '23
I was at a golf course and a family of moose were chilling right after the 2nd tee off. I took a drop and finished on the back 9.

Fuckin A. A moose will attack a car or truck and they give zero fucks about killing a human. They're like the hippos of North America.
→ More replies (2)96
u/ArkAngelHFB Apr 01 '23
Oddly you are really fucking correct becuase not only are they scary fast on land...
They are strong swimmers that have been recorded diving 30 to 40 feet deep in lakes, rivers, coastal areas... just to nomnomnom on some underwater vegetation.
^ Oddly this also means that one of a Moose's only natural predictor is the fucking Killer Whale.
28
u/combover78 Apr 01 '23
Yeah I've read that about them diving and seen them swimming (in video) and they seem quite at home. Is there evidence of whales killing moose? I'd think a seal would be an easier meal.
You know, it feels like people have become arrogant about being at the top of the food chain but don't seem to realize we only got here by learning to work together. One human alone in the wild is very much a meal for something.
21
u/CedarWolf Apr 01 '23
Moose will swim across straits to get from one shore to the other, and orcas are very intelligent creatures. They'll wait until the moose are far enough from shore, in the deeper waters, and they'll just grab the moose by a leg and pull them under.
19
u/Plainclothesnpc Apr 01 '23
There is evidence of orcas eating moose. It’s not often but they are known to eat them if they ever spot one in the water

I'm from Ga, driven to Colorado a number of times camping and have only seen a few moose. They have all my respect, I'm aware of how dangerous they are. Came around the trail to a sizeable bull moose in the Eagles Nest Wilderness, just larger than life. Meanwhile, I saw a number of folks chasing one through a RMNP campground to get a picture.

If a couple adults wanna go stand next to a moose, might as well let them if they won't listen to reason. The moose can more than take care of itself. We get lots of moose through my town and they generally leave people alone.
However moose in the wild should be avoided at all costs. Three of my cousins have had moose charge them in the wild.
Funny story I was driving up in the mountains once on a logging road and came across a moose. I can't exactly drive my car off the mountain and can't turn around so I just have to go forward. The moose probably ran in front of my car for a mile as I slowly made my way before it realized that it could in fact go elsewhere besides the road.

I don't know about that. They were definitely egged on by their ego so that they wouldn't "lose" to this guy. Dude might not have actually touched it if he wasn't drunk.
8
u/jackinsomniac Apr 01 '23
Dude might not have actually touched it if he wasn't drunk.
Lol, I think that's the main point here.
This is just drunk idiots being drunk idiots, trying to fuck with a moose. Until OP comes out his house and tells them to stop.
But sure, I guess telling drunk idiots to stop what they're doing is futile, is that what you're saying? Him telling them to stop "insulted their ego", so it's not their fault they made it a game and "can't 'lose' to this guy".

Every negative encounter I’ve ever had with moose has been in winter. They get stressed out by the difficulty in finding food and the snow forcing them into more congested, oftentimes populated, areas and wind up getting pretty ornery.
I just had a cow moose in my driveway a couple days ago who was very much not into me walking out to my truck.
In rutting season, and summer for the most part, they all but ignore you unless you’re getting right up in their business. When they have ample escape routes and haven’t been stressed from lack of food, moose are generally super chill in my experience.

A coworker’s friend bought a cabin up in Montana. He was tending to his land when a moose snuck up on him and stomped the shit out of him, sent him to the hospital in critical condition with a cracked skull and multiple broken bones. Dude genuinely seemed like he was going to die. Moose are nothing to fuck with. They can easily destroy you. If you’ve never seen one in person, you might be surprised by how large they are. I’ve seen quite a few in Yellowstone and they are absolutely massive.

Since there's no ending to this video, I decided to ask chatgpt what happened.
Here's the rest of the story lol
As the two men continued to taunt and harass the moose, the animal grew increasingly agitated. Its eyes narrowed, and its muscles tensed as it prepared to defend itself against the senseless aggression.
Suddenly, the moose charged, its massive hooves pounding the ground with thunderous force. The two men tried to run, but they were no match for the animal's speed and strength.
One of the men stumbled and fell, and the moose seized the opportunity to strike. Its hooves came down hard on the man's back, sending him sprawling to the ground with a sickening thud.
The other man tried to help his friend, but the moose was too fast. It lunged forward, its antlers catching the man in the side and lifting him off the ground. He screamed in terror as the animal tossed him aside like a rag doll, leaving him battered and broken on the forest floor.
As the moose stood triumphantly over the two men, it seemed to gaze at them with a mix of anger and sadness. Perhaps it was wondering why humans could be so cruel to a majestic creature like itself, or maybe it was simply savoring the sweet taste of revenge.
Either way, the men had learned a painful lesson: that nature was not to be trifled with, and that the consequences of their actions could be deadly. As they lay there, battered and broken, they could only pray for a swift end to their suffering, and hope that others would learn from their foolish mistakes.

You’re thinking of predators.
They only do it when a predator attacks a human because it has lost its fear of humans
that’s the main thing protecting us from big predators in most of the world. Animals for the must part fear and want nothing to do with us
That can be broken down by people feeding them such as bears which will lead to more interaction between them and humans
