u/djoddible Apr 01 '23
I once had a triple A pitcher ask me to heckle his buddy that was coming in in relief on the opposing team. Left my phone under my seat after the game and when I went back to get it the dude met me and said that that was the best heckling he'd ever heard. Fun moment. Again part of the game. Just be funny and creative and not overly obnoxious and its all good.

Not excusing anything, but I think heâs frustrated considering the amount of time he hasnât played due to injures and the numbers heâs put up since coming to LA. Then throw in the constant heckling from fans (some even Angels fans) and I could see him snapping like this.
13
u/tendieful Apr 01 '23
Honestly bro you make a compelling argument but anyone who has grown still sees it as a fragile ego cause thatâs what it is.
People will criticize you even when you do everything right. Itâs just a part of life. The more basic and derogatory the criticism, the less serious it should be taken. If anyone ever calls you a bitch, just remember it says a lot more about that person and their character than it does about you. And most people can see that when their not the victim of the insult.

I just don't understand why he cares so much to risk it like this. Some random dude who paid money to come and see YOU perform under the lights heckles you, and you can't just get over it? Seems like it comes with the territory. Pro athletes are some of the most insecure people on the planet in my experience, I suppose that's just part of their extreme mentality to win and be liked though.
10
u/Yerawizzardarry Apr 01 '23
When you think about it these are usually people who have been payed since the day they became adults to play a literal game. I wouldn't really expect them to have the normal life experiences that matures us.
They're pretty much still doing the same thing they did at 13-18

I'll go state to state getting beat up by baseball players, after that I'm moving on to the NFL. If I can survive the beatings I'll have enough money to pay for my extensive medical treatment that I'll need for the rest of my life

74
u/burnerking Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 02 '23
Berkman used to get heckled because he looked heavy (chubby face). A fan once threw a Twinkie at him in the outfield. He thanked the fan and ate it. https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2003-06-03-0306030253-story.html
Edited: Thanks for the few upvotes people. Just wanted say I know it sounds cliche, but the ball players really are an ambassador of the sport and their team. Berkman could have acted like RendĂłn, instead he won over some fans. Full disclosure: I am an unabashed Houstonian and Astros fan. RendĂłn is also a Houstonian which makes this even worse.

Could probably be argued that calling someone a bitch with the understanding that said bitch isnât allowed to square off on you for it is fairly fucking fragile, too. Same shit happens when people abuse servers, cashiers, flight attendants, whatever. Folks feel comfortable treating professionals poorly, no?
If someone walks up to you, calls you a bitch, and you absorb it with a forced smile, maybe they were right.

There was an umpire in Philly who ejected a fan a few years back and lots of people were squealing about it. If the players can't take a little heckling they should find another line of work, the usual crap from people who think the whole world is their living room and they can behave any way they please. It turned out that the ejected fan had been screaming homophobic obscenities at every opposing player who came to bat, and when he was kicked out everyone in his section applauded.
A's fans don't get much entertainment from their team these days, maybe this is what they substitute for good baseball.
17
u/Word_Iz_Bond Apr 01 '23
As an annoying fan myself, fans can be absolute assholes. Terrible look for Rendon, but I'm inclined to think this dude deserved to get hemmed up for talking too sweet
11
u/AtsignAmpersat Apr 01 '23
I really donât get the reaction here. Some guy calls another guy a bitch and is confronted over it. Sometimes you call someone a bitch and they ignore you. Sometimes they donât. If you donât want the consequences of talking shit to someone. Donât talk shit?
4
u/BTBskesh Apr 01 '23
Because itâs part of the sport. You want to infuriate the opposite team so that they fuck up. Itâs a very common and basic thing in sports. Itâs normal. It belongs to sports. Have you ever seen fans at football (real name for soccer) games yelling at the opposite team? There are whole chants and songs about players insulting them etc. This dude is just a bitch ass pussy lmao.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Newdaytoday1215 Apr 01 '23
Itâs not part of the sport. This is why so many decent ppl w families donât attend sporting events anymore. Which is a shame because the major of sports fans wouldnât lower themselves to such a garbage standard. It doesnât belong in sports, it belongs to entitled POS. Thereâs no bottom in this behavior. And from where Iâm sitting the guy that ran his mouth then clammed up when confronted was pretty much proven to be the bitch.

The ppl who think the fan is right are the real bitches. You go to a game to insult and swear at strangers knowing they could be risking their careers and/or big fines if they retaliate, no matter how much of a cunt you are. Try that out on the street - please, tough guys, just be sure to film it too for the rest of us! You ruin the game for those of us just trying to enjoy a good game of baseball. If youâre that pent up, go jump off a fucking building.
And he wasnât trying to slap him, he was trying to smack the brim of his hat down over his eyes. It was a just a âhello, fucko, I see youâ grab meant to make the pussy fan piss his pants a little, lol. The only thing that may have got hurt was the big mouthâs pride.
