I'm not sure what the right thing to do is in that situation. Every ounce of me would want to leave, but that seems dangerous while they're not acting aggressively. Anyone know?

662

u/3SquirrelsinaCoat Apr 01 '23

The wildlife advice for my area (and I live in a wooded spot with black bears) is if you happen to cross paths with a bear, you stand tall, don't start acting aggressive, and let the bear move on, which it almost certainly will. The advice is "just enjoy the moment because it is so rare." There are no records of an unprovoked black bear attack in the history of my state. They just don't do it, so long as you are chill. If they start coming toward you, curious, that's when you start making some noise and letting them know they need to back off.

On the flip side of that, I recall a story where there was a black bear outside someone's house, just chillin, and the people wanted to chase it off so they threw a stone at it through the window...and the bear came through the fucking window, like "was I bothering you? Now you're throwing stones? Don't start shit there won't be shit!"

Watched this movie in theaters with my wife on our first fucking real date. No pussy that night, and honestly I wasn’t even upset - that movie gutted me in so many ways.

10

u/combover78 Apr 01 '23

So it ended up not being a fucking date, but just a date.

I get black bears sniffing around my house looking for trash in the fall (I lock it in the shed.) My go to technique for getting them to "move along" is bangin a shovel on the driveway, or a hockey stick if I'm feeling especially canadian.

I think I may have heard a different version of this stone story, was their house by any chance made of glass?

2

u/Dear_Ambellina03 Apr 01 '23

Meanwhile here in Colorado, black bear attacks are rare but they do happen. In fact this bear and her cubs would likely be relocated or possibly even euthanized.

2

u/Luverinx Apr 01 '23

What if they’re hungry af and hunting for food? Do you still just stand there and be calm and hope for it to not eat you? /gen

19

u/3SquirrelsinaCoat Apr 01 '23

A black bear's diet is predominantly berries, fruit, and insects. They might go after a smaller mammal, or pick at some fresh road kill, but humans are definitely not on the menu. Only reason a black bear will come at you is if you're fucking with it and posing a threat. Otherwise, they take off.

2

u/Shlocktroffit Apr 01 '23

They will be interested in you and possibly approach if you smell like food, too

→ More replies (1)

2

u/FaintCommand Apr 01 '23

Yeah, but they can be extra aggressive if they have young cubs with them.

4

u/Blarggotron Apr 01 '23

You have a slight chance of fending off a black bear via face / sack attacks, but you definitely cannot outrun it if it were as close as this video.

In this situation he's fine just chilling like he is, being calm and speak in calm voice. The second there's enough distance between you and that bear you get the fuck inside though. Black Bears are giant babies but there's a reason the term is "momma bear" and not some other animal lol

There are very few Brown bears in N America compared to black. I'm not sure of the exact figures but I believe there are under 50k brown bears and close to a million black.

I've personally scared away more than one black bear in my days of hiking/camping. I would not attempt to scare off a brown giant monster.

9

u/combover78 Apr 02 '23

black bears: 300,000

brown bears: 30,000

that's in the US

3

u/MUCHO2000 Apr 02 '23

Nice. I was speaking of N America you got those figures handy by chance?

3

u/combover78 Apr 02 '23

Canada had another 20,000 brown but I don't remember the numbers on black. Probably figure about the same ratio. I was surprised and thought Canada would have more than US.

Cool fact, but there’s about a billion black bears and 3 brown bears so this statistic isn’t as meaningful as you might think.

My dad actually went to college with the second brown bear. The other two were dicks but apparently he was a pretty good dude (for a bear) and they stayed friends for years until around 2008 when he started watching Fox News and going on 4chan and eventually went full Trump anti-vaxxer and my dad kinda fell out of touch with him. It was pretty crazy just eating dinner one night watching the news and seeing that they’d killed 26 people. My dad was never really the same after that.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/UncommonCense Apr 01 '23

This stat is proving that black bears are not that deadly right?

5

u/OnePunchDan Apr 01 '23

Doesn’t prove anything. A black bear can and will fuck you up

4

u/UncommonCense Apr 01 '23

A human can also fuck a black bear up… is fun fact time over now?

2

u/OnePunchDan Apr 01 '23

Okay?? This guy hit a bear in the neck with an axe and is lucky to be alive

Black bears might be shy and spook easily but they should still be respected and could kill you easily

0

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

[deleted]

16

u/UncommonCense Apr 01 '23

But statistically speaking aren’t that dangerous. You said yourself that there have only been 16 black bear fatalities since 2010… So statistically speaking dogs are more dangerous than bears, as they average at least 30 fatalities per year in the united states. So thats what i mean when i said black bear are not that dangerous. Feel free to fact check me.

6

u/Grimsqueaker69 Apr 01 '23

Statistically may be the wrong word. If you look at the fatalities vs the number of animals it may show that black bears are statistically far more deadly. But in reality you are far less likely to get mauled by one than a dog

→ More replies (2)

1

u/LeDimpsch Apr 01 '23

So… did you factor in the number of dogs vs the number of black bears in the U.S.?

There's also the issue of how many human/bear encounters vs how many human/dog encounters, etc.

But yeah, the number of dogs vs bears is the obvious question.

3

u/UncommonCense Apr 01 '23

No but neither did the initial comment comparing black bear fatalities to brown bear fatalities… if you like we can compare wild spider deaths to black bears and the answer may still surprise you.

Grab the cub and hold it up as a hostage so the mother doesn’t try anything

4

u/Sid-Biscuits Apr 02 '23

At the very least you get to hug a li’l bear cub before you die a horrifying, excruciating death.

36

u/YungLini Apr 01 '23

I think when you’re that close you’re not going to be able to outrun it either way. So like you said, if it’s not acting aggressively, I’d just stay pretty still and quiet and pray it stays chill. But don’t take my advice I’m from England and never even seen a bear let alone been this close to one lmao

34

u/t0m0hawk Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

The mother approached and clearly knew he was there. She's obviously super familiar with people, but now so are her cubs. She looks like she's fine with him as long as he stays where he is and doesn't make sudden "aggressive" movements.

This isn't a great situation, but mostly for the bears. Bears who get too familiar with humans are bears with greater chance of being put down.

This is the saying for bears.

If it’s black, attack. If it’s brown, lay down. If it’s white, goodnight.

Black bears are the ones that when you see a video of a cat chasing a bear up a tree

Brown bears are way more aggressive and territorial. They see something that moves and it’s their instinct to kill it

White bears are a sorta mix of the two, but on steroids

15

u/PurpleTime7077 Apr 01 '23

Idk if that applies to a black bear with its cub right there....

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Richieboy81 Apr 01 '23

I’ve heard something very similar but the idea behind If it’s black, attack, was more that if a black bear is in attack mode, they are either starving, or protecting young, they will attack with all intentions of killing you.

-1

u/pipperfloats Apr 01 '23

This saying is NOT trying to imply that black bears are sissies so it's ok to fight back. The saying exists because black bears are more likely (than other bears) to be hunting you for food- so if it attacks, your best bet is to fight back because it won't likely go away on its own. Brown/ grizzly bears are more likely to attack because they are startled/scared or view you as a threat. Once you lie down and get into a fetal position, you are no longer seen as a threat and the bear moves on.

10

u/BallEngineerII Apr 01 '23

Black bears are not hunting you for food. They are skittish and usually easily scared off.

7

u/pipperfloats Apr 01 '23

Yes, but WHEN they attack, it's typically due to them viewing you as prey, and not a defensive reaction (as it is with brown bears). Hence the advice to "Attack if black."

Read more here: Though black bears rarely kill or seriously injure people, when they do, it's most often the result of predatory behavior by males inside their wilderness home ranges and not by females protecting cubs or animals defending a carcass, said Dr. Stephen Herrero, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary and author of the classic Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance.

At a minimum, wouldn’t you stop talking? I really wanted him to stop talking.

6

u/Large-Examination-23 Apr 02 '23

The bear was aware of him the whole time. By maintaining a similar tone of voice, the bear knew where he was and that it was still a chill situation. If he had jumped up, raised his voice or possibly gone quiet she would have reacted to the change in situation.

5

u/Additional_Tomato_22 Apr 01 '23

Also it becomes a completely different story with cubs involved because Mama will do ANYTHING to protect her babies. He was in the right there to not move because had he moved towards the cub Mama almost certainly would’ve perceived that as a threat and attacked to defend her cub

3

u/Leading_Summer7900 Apr 01 '23

Preface this by saying I'm an idiot, but black bears u can easily scare them off, but when he started going at the Cubs that was when I was scared for his life. Just assume momma bear would override any fear she had to tear his face off from her Cubs.

3

u/SNYDER_BIXBY_OCP Apr 01 '23

A Black Bear, in theory, could be sacred away, BUT the baby present makes it a HUGE issue.

The best option in this scenario at this house is, EGRESS inside, to a door or something but GAIN separation.

Those fuckers are fast. You don't know if the bear is desperately hunting food, or haphazardly wandering.

We were about two miles into a trail in the smokies, and encountered a mama bear with two cubs sniffing us. Another guy in our group just pulled out an umbrella, running at them while opening and closing it. The bears left in a hurry, I would have never thought to bring an umbrella on a hike.

18

u/WerewolfUnable8641 Apr 01 '23

I see someone paid attention when they watched Indiana Jones The Last Crusade.

22

u/SNYDER_BIXBY_OCP Apr 01 '23

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Nazrael75 Apr 01 '23

same. The bear is bad enough but being a black bear can most likely be scared off. With the cub though mama aint goin anywhere. Also cant get back inside once the mama bear passed because the cub was between dude and where i think the door is since he'd be walking right towards the cub and inviting an attack.

That is a scary situation.

Black bear mothers are not defensive of their young like grizzlies

→ More replies (1)

2

u/sanfranchristo Apr 01 '23

The most fearful I'd be is of the cub. Clearly, the mother saw him and decided he wasn't a enough of threat to turn around but if the cub gets curious and starts sniffing over to him. Then, you're out of good options—don't try to scare it away and you risk it getting close which the mother is definitely not going to stand by for or do try to scare it away and have the mother now perceive you as a threat which she also is definitely not going to stand by for. Shit.

2

u/kingfisher773 Apr 01 '23

yeah i am pretty sure black bears tend to be more harmless and can be scared off easily, but if they have a kid win them then they may act more aggressive if you do anything.

As someone who frequents national parks, it is important in this situation to remain calm, speak in a calm voice, and not make quick motions until momma bear looks away and you can snatch baby bear up to run inside.

42

u/Dumbass369 Apr 01 '23

Bears generally are just chill animals unless you give them a reason not to be, this dude made the smartest move by just sitting there, and talking in a calm voice, not being threatening

16

u/ArcherChase Apr 01 '23

I'd imagine screaming and jumping up could be seen as threatening. Normally bear may run but that cub makes me think being chill saved his ass.

3

u/Additional_Tomato_22 Apr 01 '23

That’s definitely the worst thing as it startled the mom but with the cub there it’d activate her defend at all costs mode

7

u/Ohbeejuan Apr 01 '23

Here’s a pretty good, concise resource. https://www.nps.gov/articles/bearattacks.html I honestly wouldn’t worry about it though, it’s a pretty rare occurrence. If you are so concerned and going hiking or something get some bear spray, pretty cheap and effective way of deference.

9

u/Apprehensive-Ad1363 Apr 01 '23

not with cubs around, there is no telling how a black bear mom is going to treat you if her cub is that close to you. generally black bears are skittish in nature otherwise.

26

u/karma_virus Apr 01 '23

It's like D&D Dragons. Black Bears have DC14 for animal taming, Brown Bears around DC 20, And Polar Bears have DC 12 right up until they hit puberty, then they invariably get DC40 and eat their trainer on any roll less than a natural 10. Do NOT fuck around with Polar Bears. Don't fuck around with brown bears. Black bears? Yeah you shouldn't get too close ether, just watch them from a distance and yell at them if they start wandering too close, usually spooks them away. But in general, Don't fuck around with bears. Unless you're Russian, then the bear mauling is a cultural rite of passage.

The babies definitely add a level of anxiety to the mix, but as the saying goes “don’t start no shit, won’t be no shit”. I’ve come across cubs before and their aggressive mama bear and if you just don’t give them attention and move away calmly like it’s NBD, it’ll be NBD.

This is like the opposite of those videos where the chick is screaming like a banshee for something super minor. But this guy is super calm when he should be freaking out.

u/AlphaEcho534 Apr 01 '23

do people not realize how fast a fucking bear could just start eating you alive??!?

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

u/captainfunder Apr 01 '23

The bear didn't bother him because it knew this guy could use his solid steel fucking balls as a weapon.

Watch out for those mama bears! I’ve had some close calls with bears, this guy stayed so calm!

2

u/AgentMercury108 Apr 01 '23

Go get her some food

2

u/Ok-Swordfish2723 Apr 01 '23

It’s all good. They were just looking for some Charmin.

2

u/ShesATragicHero Apr 01 '23

Must. Not. Pet. ( but I want tooooo)

2

u/BPE2019 Apr 01 '23

I like how he was only slightly alarmed with just the bear but once he seen the cubs he started freaking out. You can almost hear the very Moment his heart falls out his ass. I would’ve been in the same boat

2

u/igor_the_dior Apr 01 '23

This is literally the EXACT opposite of a public freak out

2

u/joe6744 Apr 01 '23

shit, look at the comments. the public is definitely freaking out.. reverse uno style..

2

Black Bear: Don't Care

2

u/Ant10102 Apr 01 '23

For those who do not know. Bears are relatively chill. However, when with babies, far from chill, he is very lucky to be alive

2

u/xxGhostlyx Apr 01 '23

If not friend then why shaped like friend

2

u/Halfbreed75 Apr 01 '23

Zero survival skills with this kid. What’s up with that?

2

u/datcoolbloke Apr 01 '23

This guy must be a little slow.

2

u/Scorpinock Apr 01 '23

Pick the baby bear up and yeet it into the forest. When Momma bear goes to get it, make your escape.

2

u/gnamp Apr 02 '23

I’m SHOCKED that Momma bear brought along her (very adorable.) cubs!! I would have been utterly terrified!!

The lack of education on bears when you live near them is incredible

5

u/Sekouu Apr 01 '23

hey elliot rojers here

4

u/PanJhinAttack Apr 01 '23

I'd just die because I would try and give belly rubs.

4

u/ShiftInteresting4831 Apr 01 '23

Ummm, his lack of concern is… dude doesn’t realize the luck in this encounter

2

u/puppycatisselfish Apr 01 '23

They passed the vibe check and we’re spared. Maybe bears just need proper casual friendly greetings to not get mad.

2

u/scobo505 Apr 01 '23

His last post?

2

u/ItsactuallyEminem Apr 01 '23

Me watching this like:

"Hm ok a black bear seems chill, not really dangerous tbh anything goes wrong just scare him off and you should be f.. is that a fucking cub? DUDE HOLY SHIT DONT MOVE OH FUCK HE IS GOING TO DIE HOLY SHIT FUUUUUUUUUCK.. ok he gone O HE LOOKING BACK oh ok he is gone omg so cute

2

u/BlindJustice784 Apr 01 '23

Sooo he almost died

1

u/Metroncat Apr 01 '23

They are not his homies. As a person who knows black bears with their cubs are so dangerous, he’s lucky that bear didn’t rip off his head and poop down his neck,

1

u/aaron_adams Apr 01 '23

Wouldn't really call this a public freak out, as it is neither public nor a freak out, but I hope he doesn't actually try to touch one of those cubs.

Not much you can do but be calm in that moment.

1

u/Sisqidiva Apr 01 '23

Err a mama bear and he didn’t freak the fuck out? I’d of been finding a way to get out of there quick and not talk to me like he’s Goldilocks! 😆

1

u/Vtfreedom87 Apr 01 '23

Hahaha so many bear experts in these comments 😂🤣😂

1

u/dissjsjs Apr 01 '23

I got 10-15 ft away from a cub and mama on accident up in the smokys. One of the most exciting moments of my life.

1

u/pugdaddy78 Apr 01 '23

I was charged by a mother bear with Cubs a couple years ago. Scary AF she stopped about 4 feet from me and was kind of barking and snapping her teeth. I came very close to shooting her out of fear.

1

u/SnooMachines1137 Apr 01 '23

Saw the bear, I’m like oh shit I guess it’s the weird one out of every bunch and it’s not gonna attack you. THEN I SAW THE CUB. I can’t remember the last time I felt my heart drop like that without something actually happening in front of me irl

1

u/cpelt2020 Apr 01 '23

That guy is so close to being taken out. Black bears you make your self big and try and scare them off… when alone. Don’t mess with a momma and cub.

1

u/Spook-lad Apr 01 '23

The second the cub rounded the corner i knew that his options to survive were few, thank god she didnt maul the poor lad

1

u/factisfiction Apr 01 '23

You need to make sure you're scaring them off any chance you get. It's not safe for either of you for them to become comfortable walking up to your home. Bears that become too comfortable with humans end up as dead bears and humans that become too comfortable around the wrong bears become dead humans.

I grew up with grizzlies that would come into my yard and now as an adult I live in an area where I get about 20 black bear visits a week. It's important to make noise and shew them off so they find a lot where they can safely lounge around and look for food.
