The older I get, the more I realize that the sample set of people you meet online are the worst of humanity.

54

u/ThatOneGuy_2020-1 13d ago

I used to agree, and then I met more people in the real world. It's the same people, they're just easier to ignore in real life.

Not really the worse, but they say what they want because well... its through a screen.. no ones gonna stop em. But i've seen worse people on social media in my experience. I should prob check out more toxic games like rust to see a difference.

I never understood why people get so upset over a game. Like, holy shit, chill! It's just a game.

I still remember people screaming at me for using an underbarrel grenade launchers in MW2 all those years ago. Even got kicked a few times

74

u/valgrind_error 13d ago

I’m not a psychologist but I wonder if it’s a similar mechanism to road rage. Some people just turn into absolute psychotic animals behind the wheels of cars. Similar thing seems to happen in online gaming.

37

u/GillyMonster18 13d ago

I’d say it’s more they think online anonymity gives them the ability to act like a turd without consequences. 99% of the people who behave like this wouldn’t act this way in public because they know it’s unacceptable.

10

u/FlawsAndConcerns 12d ago

I’d say it’s more they think online anonymity gives them the ability to act like a turd without consequences.

I mean, for the most part, it DOES.

The difference comes between what you choose to do with that 'power'. Non-jerks have no issue under these circumstances, because...well, they're not jerks.

Barrier aggression, it’s a fear response. Like dogs that bark through the fence but are suddenly well behaved when the gate is open. The inability to fight that the barrier represents allows the person to display all the insecurity rage that is prohibited in actual interaction.

8

u/Amythyst369 12d ago

Never heard barrier aggression used in a human context before but it makes sense.

People with low self esteem attach too much value to their performance in video games that use match making algorithms that hold them to around a 50% win rate.

54

u/blackrainbow316 13d ago

I used to think it was that. But I've realized I don't care what my kdr is compared to anyone else. I just care if my own performance is getting better or not.

Now I get angry at cheaters and other bullshit. Otherwise I just play on.

18

u/Flushles 13d ago edited 13d ago

I think it's more that people's self esteem is attached to the hierarchies they (potentially) thrive in, not that they have low self esteem so they latch on to video games I'm sure there's increasingly niche groups that have specific "rockstars" no one knows about.

Edit I moved a comma

I can tell you from experience. Being a girl is not comparable to just normal toxic people. Playing valorant for example. As a guy I get a toxic lobby maybe 1/15 times. When I play with a girl, that number jumps up to about 5/10 times.

Also, when playing solo the toxicity is not directed towards me most of the time. When a girl is present it's always her that gets insulted

63

u/CrownedPeach 13d ago

You are 100% correct and they even did a few small studies and recordes it. I hope they do larger studies and prove it more conclusively. Sauce

Thank you so much for sticking up for girls who want to game.

15

u/vapenutz 13d ago

Hey, don't worry. I'll say that online gaming went absolutely downhill over last 10-15 years. Matchmaking ruined the whole fun for me, I just sticked around on the same servers where you actually made friends and people started to recognize you. With CS:S I just played surf and jailbreak where shit was actually fun, there were some insane maps - some of them actually made by friends that I've played with.

You're not missing out on much. It's really fucking boring and a lot of people who get high off their own farts don't play to have fun, they actually play so they can feel better about themselves.

7

u/A_Simple_Magikarp 13d ago

I felt the same way about TF2, once the matchmaking thing came along, I stuck to custom servers exclusively. class wars, stop that tank, x100... those were the days!

I'm a girl gamer and I'm really good at gta v, 2k, and madden. 2k is where the meanest people are imo. Madden isn't bad at all. Gta online is a mix of people calling me a prepubescent squealer or they find out I'm actually a girl and then they call me a cheater because I'm high ranking. I always tell people to look at my kdr, it's barely above 1.

43

u/BareFox 13d ago

People who don't play sports games really don't realize just how toxic people are on 2k. Like people will go out of their way to send you insanely toxic messages WHEN THEY WIN. Not to mention rec and other shit in MyCareer, it's a mess and the game doesn't even have a report button (at least from what I remember, I finally stopped playing last year).

23

u/Paramisamigos 13d ago

I haven't played since pre covid. I had a good group to play with too. We all played our parts too so we dominated the court at the park. Pippen has always been a favorite of mine so I'm the dedicated two man.

One thing that was explained to me was a lot of the guys that would try to come in and tell me to back off the court so they could join or just be downright degrading were dudes from bad neighborhoods who couldn't really go play at their local courts so they'd play the closest thing. Most of them weren't really familiar with a girl being in control of her own life and not needing a man to tell her what to do so they didn't care for me because I didn't respect them aka follow their demands.

6

u/BareFox 13d ago

That is insane, but I don't doubt that it's true. It's really sad to see what 2k has turned into these days, from the toxic community and the absolute casino that is MyTeam (which was my own main mode). Really wish someone else would try to make another basketball game aside from 2k.

I mean you know they're stupid then because rank has nothing to do with skill in GTA:O. It's basically just a measurement of playtime.

R6 Siege is super toxic regardless of gender. Those ultra aggressive mf’ers will absolutely go out of their way to spew their negativity to anyone and everyone. I used to play a lot of R6 Vegas back in the day and the vast majority of players back then were friendly. Sad and disgusted with the current state.

29

u/Vmanaa 13d ago

R6 just sucks. Havent seen any other game with more toxic, throwers, griefers/TK community.

23

u/squidbelik 13d ago

This is the exact reason why Ubi is making so many changes to tackle griefing and trolls, and so many of those players just cry about the changes. The toxicity makes it so difficult for new players to enjoy the game.

18

u/ShadowZpeak 13d ago

For old players too. R6 pretty much had the best voice quality, even better than discord. This led to a lot of people with good microphones (which you could tell apart instamtly) talking and others joining in. It was a blast coming home, hopping onto ranked and just having fun with everyone else, finding out about their day or hearing a funny story

10

u/squidbelik 13d ago

Exactly. I remember when I used to solo queue ranked, which I did from bronze to plat 2, and my games weren’t toxic at all. I found that communicating early and asking how people’s games were going, making small talk, etc. made the vibe of the games positive even though they went poorly. But then when my friend who was new to the game started playing, he immediately made my games way more toxic and people reciprocated that. It’s so easy to be toxic, but if you put effort, it also doesn’t have to be, which to be fair isn’t easy for lots of people. It’s just unfortunate it has to be that way. But I just hope that the new changes make it easier for everyone to enjoy the game that way.

42

u/babyteddie 13d ago

I find R6 is more racist than misogynistic in my experience

62

u/hnnnghf 13d ago

I’ve been threatened to be r*ped in siege, there’s definitely racism but there is so much misogyny that I think you’re wrong saying it’s “more racist” than misogynistic. It’s very much of both to the point it’s really not comparable

25

u/one-joule 13d ago

It's not a matter of whether there's more of one than the other, it's about whether there's enough of each one to make the experience unenjoyable. And clearly there's far too much of both.

9

u/DerWaechter_ 13d ago edited 12d ago

It's also a matter of perspective. Regardless of which one is more prevalent, a woman is automatically going to be exposed to more misogyny than racism, wheras a guy is going to be more exposed to racism by virtue of not being the target of misogyny.

Doesn't make either of the two okay though

But also so many online games work better with cooperation but so many pick shouting instead

12

u/lordsaladito 13d ago

What is the endgoal of deep rock, like its a looter shooter?

67

u/Unspeakblycrass 13d ago

Not really. There are like 8 different mission types and in each mission the cave systems are randomly generated so it almost always feels like a new environment (unless you’re like me with nearly 1000 hours in who starts to recognize small patterns).

You work as a team of 4 to mine minerals, build refineries, hunt giant bugs and more. Each Dwarf is equipped with unique weapons, traversal and utility tools designed to work in conjunction with your fellow Dwarves.

To answer your question, DRG is about team work, survival, fun, dancing and beer. Also Darkness and dead bugs.

I found the solution for this one, but its sad: never reveal you’re a girl

7

u/Emotional_Let_7547 13d ago

Phasmophobia was like that too. If a girl makes themselves known then there is usually a creep in the match that either trash talks them, says creepy stuff or follows them around annoying them.

It makes me uncomfortable just being 3ed party witness to it. I can't imagine having to deal with it all the time.

Sorry you had to deal with that. Honestly, that toxicity is a big part of why I avoid online games.

156

u/greengengar 13d ago

It's kinda sad really. Like banter is an important part of the MP experience, but with random strangers, boundaries stop existing in a bad way.

67

u/Ebinebinebinebin 13d ago

Yeah like I banter in video games but I always make sure to be funny about it, while almost everyone just uses twitch lingo to trash talk each other in the most infuriatingly uncreative and unfunny ways possible.

Everyone is talking about "oh how amazing would be *insertsingleplayergame* with a multiplayer!". NO IT WILL NOT. And multiplayer games tend to have that thing called "balance" which is strangely destroys all fun.

9

u/_Bill_Huggins_ 13d ago edited 13d ago

I agree for many games. When I find a great single player game to play and I see comments about how it needs multiplayer I feels this way usually.

I believe this is part of what killed Elite Dangerous the online space flight simulator. They needed to keep weapon damage in check so they made turreted guns attached to your ship do way less damage even though that makes little sense to do so. Turreted guns could track in 360 degrees so it's an obvious advantage. In real life a turreted ship gun doesn't do less damage because it's on a turret... But pvp balancing made it necessary.

So you were left with something that when you did PvE it made no sense at all.

Sure you need some balance in single player but you don't need nearly as much.

For me it's the toxicity and the fact that for 5 days a week I'm working this 8 to 6 job which requires all my energy. I'm not interested in competing with sweaty smoothbrain bigots after all those hours of shoveling shit.

I'd rather play depression simulator and continue my Disco Elysium playthrough lol

There are so many great single player games that I hardly have time for multis except when hanging out with friends!

Gaming is a female trait men should go build houses and fight in wars

42

u/ZacIDK 13d ago

My dumbass thought you said build horses instead of houses

u/folko1 13d ago

I'd be willing to learn horse construction.

I mean I play Overwatch 2 and communication in voice chat that is actually useful to the game is like 1 in 100 games. Granted I’m in Plat, but still.

u/Zagden 13d ago

FF14 is like 1/3 female players and is pretty good with that

I have both male and female characters and I've been harassed more on the males than the females lol

107

u/LyyC 13d ago

FFXIV is definitely less toxic but I've been harassed differently there. Had my fair share of people either stalking or trying to groom me, when I was a bit younger and they heard through VC that I am female and single.

The issue with FFXIV is that blocking someone, doesn't stop them from stalking you in-game. If you happened to be on their friendlist at some point, you will always be on their FL, until they delete it themselves. Doesn't matter if you unfriend or block them. They see in which area you are because of it and follow you. You could even end up in a raid with them.

That's the single thing I hated most about the game. I ended up changing names and servers, when I had the chance

16

u/aethervox_ 13d ago

Unfortunately i have very similar experiences, sure XIV is not toxic on a surface level meaning you will most likely not have people throwing slurs at you in dungeons, but many people like to brush aside the fact that within fcs and the rp community or the raiding community there is still a lot of drama prone people and also people who prey on (often underage) girls and like you've said stalking is a issue that SE has been ignoring for a long time and the GMs seem to do so as well. I've started the game at a fairly young age and quickly wound up in a fc that seemed nice at first but eventually it became clear they were trying to groom me, so i left but then they begun stalking and bullying me so i ended up deleting the character and quitting the game only to return years later on a brand new data center and character.

Since then it's been chill and i've been having a great time in xiv for the most part but even when raiding i refuse to speak in vc to avoid any unwanted attention. Thankfully most statics seem to be fine with that so long i perform my job well.

Squad is great in this respect. Not highly competitive most of the time and everyone is just the to have fun and it's evident in VC. Makes the VC a huge part of the fun in that game. Worst you'll get is from a squad lead playing very seriously and you don't follow orders lol

Back in the day I spent half my time playing Halo 3 online. I was the only girl in those rooms and just had fun with the chaos. My character was bright pink, my user name was imapittypincess.

COD and R6 are the absolute worst games to play if you’re not a straight white male. It’s shocking how grown men act when they don’t have to face the people they’re verbally abusing.

CSGO isn’t great, but lately I’ve found that most of the guys talking in casual matches just treat girls like they’re one of the guys. Probably helps that the player base is a bit older than the others I mentioned. Valorant is known for having a lot of women too.

I don’t blame you for just stepping away though. It’s unfortunate.

It really does blow my mind when I play League and the two people in bottom lane start flaming each other in chat. Like that's your teammate bro, why would you want to turn this 5v5 into a 4v6 just stfu and play. And it happens like 7 out of 10 games.

When everyone says just play without vc, you know the game doesn't do anything to punish toxic players. Play other games, let that game rot with already rotten people.

4

u/mr_jogurt 13d ago

this hurts my soul... if you ever want to play with other people hit me up. gaming is for everyone and i'd bee happy to help providing a non toxic lobby.
