There’s actually a play once where Scottie Pippen got nailed in the head by Bill Laimbeer but play went on. So Joey Crawford (the ref) literally dragged a concussed Pippen off the floor and to the out of bounds area as played continued.
I believe this was one of the Pistons - Bulls playoff games. MJ had to then play the whole game without Scottie, so he had no chance even though he was individually amazing.

u/snakebit1995 Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23
It doesn’t help he’s just in the lane and they can’t drive the basket with him in the way
Twice they turned the ball over by simple fact of trying not to trample this poor dude and standing there confused as a result
198
u/Neodaone Mavericks Apr 01 '23
Couldn't the wolves just clear off the paint for 3 seconds and have the refs call Anthony Davis for a defensive 3-second foul?
edit: just scrolled down and looks like other people in the other comments were thinking the same thing

u/Zachary_Stark Warriors Apr 01 '23
I feel guilty laughing at the idea that an injured player would get called for defensive 3 second violation. Like that is something I would expect in slapstick comedy.

u/wals02481 Timberwolves Apr 01 '23
He totally should have, he got up like nothing and continued playing. Should have had to sit out after that, clogged the paint for several possessions and the wolves clearly expected a pause in play.
Lakers were just like, yeah, AD is on the floor writing in pain. Happens all the time.

It depends. If AD's guy has the ball AD can camp the paint for however long he wants. That's what we learned when the warriors went up against Westbrook not long ago

Yeah they didn’t feel comfortable just dunking on an injured dude laying there lol and they were confused because they thought the game would stop. He also was clogging the lane by laying there
In the confusion the Lakers got 2 baskets and drew a foul. That’s 6 points right there. Completely turned the game
Edit: 4 points bc Dlo didn’t make the 2nd basket. My bad but you get the gist. Baffling sequence

172
u/HeyIJustLurkHere Warriors Apr 01 '23
I actually don't think it is. He goes down at 6:33, but you're allowed to be in there while pursuing a rebound. The possession continues for a few more seconds, but he's within arm's reach of Gobert at 6:30, so there's no 3-second span where he's abandoned his matchup. Then Minnesota's next possession starts at 6:20, but the ball is stolen by 6:17, and then there's a foul committed on the rebound before the Wolves get the ball back.

They only have to immediately stop the play if they suspect it’s a head injury. Otherwise, it’s up to the ref’s discretion.
I think you’ll actually find the play continues on when someone goes down much more often in football than in basketball.
184
u/thelodius Timberwolves Apr 01 '23
It’s wild that the correct play is to just yam it on this injured dudes head. If a 7 footer is taking up the paint sprawled on the ground, stop the game. Might be different at half court, idk

The lack of fairplay in basketball is kinda insane to me, dude is literally laying on the floor in pain and the opposing team is like "Yeah, tough luck, let's go 5v4 and play around him IN THE FLOOR". It's like bro, stop the mfing game, the clock even stops so you don't have the football excuse that he might be faking for time. You could even implement a rule that says AD can't comeback for the next possession or until the refs allowed to prevent people faking it aswell.
103
u/Successful-End7689 Apr 01 '23
Best way to keep AD healthy is ignore his injuries and act like nothing happened.

It’s strange that play went on for so long, but when you watch it it made sense. The Lakers were trying to foul every moment the Wolves had possession but they decided to give up the ball every time which lead to a transition situation. It’s not crazy to go for the transition points especially when they had at least a foul to give. AD wasn’t in a situation where he would be injured more, if the ball entered the Wolves half they would have fouled. Lakers ended up with 2 points and free throws from not calling the TO

If you've never had a high ankle sprain then you should know it goes like this:
- First time -- horrifically painful and out for six weeks
- Second time -- horrifically painful and out for a week
- Third time -- horrifically painful and out until the next day
- Fourth time -- horrifically painful and just gotta walk it off
I'm not a doctor, but the ankle I did it to looks like it hangs uneven now and thus I roll it all the time. It always hurts like hell but it's just a matter of minutes until it's fine.

No, he's got hyper-mobility in his joints 100%. You can tell by the way he moves, if you know what to look for. He just sprains his joints waaaaay easier than the average person. Some people with this condition can sprain their knees just walking around.
9
u/Breezyisthewind Lakers Apr 01 '23
What makes him extra fucked here is how long his limbs are. His joints are easily over leveraged when they bend as a result.
