Jalen Brunson tonight: 48 Points 4 rebounds 9 assists on 18/32 from the field and 7/12 from 3

This was an insane game from both teams and a great showing from Brunson carrying this team to a MUCH needed victory to help the team edge closer to securing a guaranteed playoff spot

I had to watch Elfrid Payton start so many times, I will ingest this shit like cocaine.

Frank Ntilikina. Jarrett Jack. Allonzo Trier. Trey Burke. Dennis Smith Jr. Jose "Matador" Calderon. Emmanuel Mudiay. They all got starter minutes on the Knicks.

I could go on and on about how shit the Knicks PG position has been over the last 15 years or so. Save for a few brief spots of brightness it might be the worst position group over that time for any team.

This season has been such a breath of fresh air.

Jack was kinda nice though weirdly. He wasn’t great, but he had some moments.

He was a certified Knick killer before he joined the team. He was old when we got him, but Jack could always ball

For real people may forget part of the reason Knicks fans were so happy about Jeremy Lin was that he was literally the only promising point guard the team had in the 2000's outside of Marbury, and Marbury wasn't even that promising cuz he was already in his late 20's when he got there.

10

u/veksone Knicks Apr 01 '23

Marbury was a hooper he just didn't have the mentality/iq it takes to lead a nba team.

15

u/Jimm120 Knicks Apr 01 '23

Raymond Felton had 2 half seasons that were really good, but that's it.

Stephon Marbury was really, good, even if he was crazy.

We had like the 2 weeks on ultra Linsanity run and like 2 months of Good (not great) Lin play before he bolted.

That's pretty much it for PG's for the knicks

7

u/RageCageJables Knicks Apr 01 '23

Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni were good except for the fact that they were old as hell.

4

u/Jimm120 Knicks Apr 01 '23

they were passable, not good.

I liked Kidd and his play for 1/2 a season was ok.

Prigs was great, but really, we're just setting the bar low by saying Kidd and Prigs were "good". They were positives.

Same way I can say that Elfrid Payton was "good" simply because he was the best guard we had. He was still not that great.

22

u/Pieguyxx Apr 01 '23

It was an absolute embarrassment that Frank "0-0-0-0" Ntilikina ever got to be a starting PG for the Knicks

I think he wasnt 100% in going to Knicks until he had that phenomenal utah series and saw how much better off he would be without Luka.

63

u/GawdHawks Knicks Apr 01 '23

Once they didn't offer him the extension he was gone IMO especially when you consider the main reason they didn't want to offer him the extension mid or before season was because they wanted to hold on to him as a trade asset and extending him made him ineligible to be traded last year. They can say whatever publicly but that's the fact and Jalen knew it too. You're never going to feel terribly valued after something like that

19

u/Jimm120 Knicks Apr 01 '23

this one right here.

The mavs really did have no chance at all in free agency 2022. But they had a chance at mid-season and they offered below what he wanted. They had a chance in free agnecy 2021 and they offered below what he wanted.

The mavs got caught trying to be slick and give a lower contract to Brunson twice and once the third chance came, he didn't even allow them.

No he isn't. There was nothing Cuban could have done. Brunson knew exactly what he was capable of doing, especially after the Utah series. And there was zero chance he would be doing what he has done this year if in Dallas.

Also, i laughed at him because he got in his feelings.

1

u/BigFatModeraterFupa Mavericks Apr 01 '23

Cuban could have offered him more money to compete with the Knicks offer.

Sometimes you need to “overpay” to keep your talent

0

u/theaaronromano Mavericks Apr 01 '23

Nope.

“It really wasn’t about the amount of money,” Cuban said, via Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. “We really didn’t get a chance to make an offer. It was Jalen’s choice. And I understand it. He knew those guys his entire life. He grew up there. It makes perfect sense.”

But you can’t act like the Mavs didn’t have the chance to extend him so he never went to free agency. It all comes down to Brunson having that poor play off series and the Mavs not believing in him.

Defence isn’t all the issues they have right now. Kyrie and Luka keep deferring to each other way too much and they dont know when to be assertive.

Kyrie looks like he doesn’t want to lead too much so it doesn’t look like he he is trying to take the team from Luka and Luka just doesn’t have great leadership qualities anyway.

Kidd has no X’s and O’s ability what so ever.

The whole thing is a mess.

2

u/ositola Lakers Apr 01 '23

Defense isn't all the issues, but it's number one by a country mile

I watch most mavs game bc I love Luka, it is defensive thats literally the number one issue with them. Plus if he stayed the chemistry on the mavs would be soooo much better AND you don’t think losing JB hurt Luka?they were drafted together! There friend! Luka probably would be happier with JB and his two best defensive players that are in Brooklyn now.

-4

u/theaaronromano Mavericks Apr 01 '23

I would get your eyes checked if i was you. Defence isn’t the number one issue. The number one issue is coaching. Kidd has no x’s and o’s what so ever.

Keeps cold players in , takes out hot players. Cant draw up a play. Never calls a time out when its needed.

1

u/Cheeswheeel Knicks Apr 02 '23

73 points at half but defense isn’t the problem.

1

Na front office is worse then coaching. Mavs got guys that don’t play D wtf is Jkid gonna do if they don’t play D bench one of the starters to play a scrub. So yes defense is the number one problem

2

u/papi617 Celtics Apr 01 '23

Eh Luka and JB worked well. But losing Brunson for nothing and giving up assets for Kyrie who might leave is the issue. For all we know the package they gave up for Kyrie could've gotten them a good big or wing.

1

u/theaaronromano Mavericks Apr 01 '23

Yeah, as long as JB was willing to defer and do less then he should have been doing.

remember at the beginning of last season, Some Mavs fans didnt even think JB was capable of being a secondary ball handler. lmao

3

u/Jimm120 Knicks Apr 01 '23

look...reality is that Brunson didn't even give dallas a chance in free agency 2022.

His extension had been spurned twice already (at mid season and the previous offseason) and after the mavs did not give him the extension he wanted at mid-season, he had already decided he was not signing with the mavs.

1

u/aoifhasoifha [NYK] Frank Ntilikina Apr 01 '23

-1

u/aoifhasoifha [NYK] Frank Ntilikina Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

That's fair. I think he also didn't like playing with Luka, which is understandable though far from the deciding factor.

23

u/d7h7n Mavericks Apr 01 '23

If Cuban really wanted him even after bungling his rookie contract and then the extension, could've offered him the max deal which I think was 5/180 or something. Obviously absolutely insane if anyone told anyone that last year but he is playing like a 30-40M dollar man this season.

And if Brunson walks away from that, there's really nothing else anyone can complain about.

32

u/GawdHawks Knicks Apr 01 '23

Lol this is crazy revisionist history. Y'all had the chance to extend him for multiple months on an even cheaper deal and turned it down.

Cuban wanted his cake and to eat it too because Brunson was his best trade asset and extending him made him ineligible to be traded. He thought he could put it off and misread the entire situation and got burned.

Then in an even bigger sign of disrespect he didn't even match the Knicks offer. Yeah, in theory he could have offered that much but there's no reason to carry Cubans water here. He fucked up a relatively easy decision to make out of pure greed and cockiness. That's it... then cried sour grapes with tampering charges afterwards.

7

u/rjcarr Supersonics Apr 01 '23

Maybe the Mavs were good only because of Brunson?

2

u/theaaronromano Mavericks Apr 01 '23

Extremely possible.

1

u/CaroleBaskinsBurner Apr 01 '23

As I said in a comment up above:

The Knicks are poised to win at least ten more games this year than they did last year. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are going to win at minimum 10 fewer games this year than they did last year.

The Knicks are 12 games over .500 with Brunson playing this year and .500 without him.

Obviously there's a few other moving parts for both teams (as there always is) but it's uhh... interesting, nonetheless.

It worked in the past with LeBron because LeBron has his own gravity so it allows Kyrie to flourish and LeBron knows how to orchestrate in offense so it also allows Kyrie to flourish, but I just don't think in today's NBA having someone who is that ball dominant on your roster makes sense.

Lol he shot 9 more times and didn't have foul trouble. He had a great game but Outclassing is a stretch

Shhhh son the grown-ups are speaking.

u/NastySassyStuff Apr 01 '23

I mean come on Mitchell is unreal but Brunson outplayed him last night. Less efficient but still efficient and 6 more points, half the turnovers, 9 assists and the W.

u/Smooth-Jaguar Lakers Apr 01 '23

I cant believe this dude is averaging 24ppg. I know Lauri prob has it locked up but Brunson should be right up there for MIP

4

u/Cheeswheeel Knicks Apr 01 '23

Brunson should win the Knicks are a play-in team without him and lauri is good but he hasn’t changed the teams as much as JB has for the Knicks.

u/swampcreature511 Apr 01 '23

Dallas really messed up lol. Jalen Bruson is legit!

7

u/antoncr Apr 01 '23

Everytime Bruson does something like this, the Mavs must be kicking themselves

6

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

Remarkable the Mavs let him go and think Kyrie is an upgrade when Brunson is definitely the more steady player and knew how to play with Luka. Kyrie barely plays and when he does its erratic, not to mention the off-court drama

u/armandocalvinisius Mavericks Apr 01 '23

This game is for all Luka stans lmao

u/prestigiousdumb Celtics Apr 01 '23

I remember when people were mocking the shit out of the Knicks and saying that Brunson was massively overpaid

7

u/dorknewyork Knicks Apr 01 '23

The Knicks are HOOPIN, im so fucking happy man

5

u/zmankills Apr 01 '23

Can't believe dallas let him go

4

u/kokaine21 Bulls Apr 01 '23

That’s fucking crazy.Props to the knicks for getting their shit straight. Knicks fan deserve it

u/MLGMostWanted Raptors Apr 01 '23

I'm a big Luka fan but now I'm beginning to question him. Brunson is a legit star and is taking the Knicks to the playoffs. Coincidentally, the season after he leaves the Mavs collapse. Can't believe they let him walk for nothing.

Ever since Cuban did that victory lap laughing at us after the Porzingis trade every single move has blown up in his face. You love to see it. Enjoy the lottery Mark.

Brunson burner back at it again

3

u/CaroleBaskinsBurner Apr 01 '23

The Knicks are poised to win at least ten more games this year than they did last year. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are going to win at minimum 10 fewer games this year than they did last year.

The Knicks are 12 games over .500 with Brunson playing this year and .500 without him.

Obligatory Mavs fucked up

2

u/SirArthurConanSwole Mavericks Apr 01 '23

Congrats again, Knicks fans!

While we’re on the subject, what’s the masses’ opinion on Mark Cuban? I’ve thought he was a dumbass that lucked into his position and have been hoping he will sell the team for years now.

I just don't get how the mavs let him go for nothing. I get that he and Luka had too much overlap, but they should've at least set things up to get a good trade for him. Like he's worth more that Ayton and imagine how much better the mavs would be if they had someone like Ayton at center. Not saying that specific trade would happen, just that a proper Brunson trade really could've set them up for the future.

Mavs front office has been absolute shit forever.
