That was not the 3rd Quarter Lakers I expected holy shit.

The Lakers before the trades could almost never win games against decent teams when LeBron had only 18 points on 43% true shooting. They needed LeBron to play amazing on offense to win against solid teams. Pelinka (with some unanticipated help from Danny Ainge) did a sensational job a couple months ago.

u/blinkhit Apr 01 '23

they actually look like a real team when hes on the bench now too

404

u/Currymvp2 Warriors Apr 01 '23

Yeah, could you imagine them going 9-6 when he was out with the foot injury? They would have gone like 3-12 before the trades.

u/Raging_Professor Apr 01 '23

would have gone like 3-12 before the trades

You are very optimistic with that 3-12. Lol

This is the first time in awhile that a team looks okay when he's not on the floor. Even the second stint Cleveland teams with Kyrie and Love would play horribly without him.

129

u/Dizzeler Supersonics Apr 01 '23

Bubble Lakers were solid as hell with him on the bench. Moreso in the bubble, but also the regular season. Rondo was on one that szn

105

u/silvusx Minneapolis Lakers Apr 01 '23

No we weren't, at least not during the regular season. Rondo's 3pt shooting was only 32%, and overall fg was 42%. We were dreading anytime he'd take a shot.

The only fond memories of regular season Rondo was his buzzer beater against the Celtics. ;)

I'm just happy playoff Rondo was a thing, but to clear things up the team was not good when Bron sits back in 2020.

29

u/jonnybravo76 Lakers Apr 01 '23

Yep. Even though the Lakers won, they got Schroder that following off-season precisely because he was seen as a backup ball handler when Lebron isn't playing. Now we have multiple players that can handle the ball or create.

48

u/LovetheNBA23 Lakers Apr 01 '23

Yea that’s why he said playoffs. Regular season was completely different with Bron off but playoff AD and Rondo held it down.

24

u/twenty3isnumber1 Lakers Apr 01 '23

People really overstate how good Rondo even was in 2020.

He was absolutely terrible in the regular season, made up for it in the playoffs, but even in the playoffs he had huge stinker games. People don't remember them, but they happened.

7

u/KaiserKaiba Apr 01 '23

His first game in the Rockets series had everyone calling him hot garbage. Magnified by Vogel saying he helped the Lakers “swag” lmao. Course his very next game he showed up

Nah. We were ass without him that year.

The next year is where we were an nba team without him. Ad and Bron both missed a ton of time that year and we were still a top 5 defense. That’s why I still maintain that team was better than ours the year before and that the league really fucked us out of a potential repeat with no rest and a super condensed schedule. Phoenix that year was the real Mickey Mouse run

This was the first time in a while that the Lakers trailed by double digits and I wasn't worried one bit. I was like, they'll be all right.

99

u/Reasonable-Trick-932 Apr 01 '23

Tbh after Portland and the Mavs where we pulled out 25+ points comebacks, I'll always have belief no matter how shit a first quarter is

7

u/Vermillion_Crab [LAL] Alex Caruso Apr 01 '23

I admire your optimism. As a Lakers fan this past few years, I always lean on the pessimist side. Lol Especially with that roster before trade deadline, I stopped believing in God and miracles.

37

u/Thimit22 Timberwolves Apr 01 '23

Is this confidence in your team or the fact that we blow so many 10+ point leads? Either way this hurts man :(

46

u/Vermillion_Crab [LAL] Alex Caruso Apr 01 '23

It's more coz of our starting lineup. Tbf with you guys, you're still a solid team. And there would always be one or two role players that randomly go off when they go up against the Lakers.

15

u/Helac3lls Apr 01 '23

If you guaranteed a healthy LeBron and AD through the playoffs most Laker fans would feel pretty confident with this team. I'm like the only that thinks the loss of Bamba was no small thing. Big guy who isn't a black hole on defense who can be the perfect backup for AD. Either way I feel a healthy Lakers team wouldn't really be outmatched in any series.

From the half time score you’d expect the lakers to get blown out but they basically had a 20 point blowout themselves in the 2nd half.

KAT was great in the 1st half. Cool to see Rui's D throw him off though.

Looking like Vando for a few possessions.

73

u/Kentang_BayBay Lakers Apr 01 '23

Rui is good against bigger players. Vando is better against wings, like what he did to Luka, Booker, and now Ant.

Imagine if he can keep that up. That rotation of Rui and Vando would be demoralizing for opposing players. A constant 2-3.

Lakers were down 76-64 and then went on a 24-2 run in the third and the Wolves never recovered. Huge win for them

240

u/ProLemon26 Timberwolves Apr 01 '23

I’m convinced we give up twice as many runs like that compared to every other team

69

u/TrojanGiant10 Lakers Apr 01 '23

There was a solid period in the 3rd where the wolves just legit stopped playing defense and started turning the ball over.

And what was up with KAT just taking those weird 3s or holding the ball for too long.

57

u/Secret-Limit3138 Timberwolves Apr 01 '23

They all have an intestinal virus and Ant was throwing up at halftime and laying in the tunnel whenever he wasn’t in the game. It was rough. KAT didn’t eat all day because when he did he would throw up. Almost the whole team has this dumb illness.

Horrible timing. They need to get healthy. It’s why they looked so exhausted and off.

27

u/TrojanGiant10 Lakers Apr 01 '23

That would explain why ANT looked lethargic and was moving as if he had stones in his shoes. Dude just looked exhausted and expressionless most of the game.

24

u/Secret-Limit3138 Timberwolves Apr 01 '23

Yeah I saw Ant run into the tunnel when he was subbed out and he threw up into a bucket. His ankle is clearly not recovered either

Can’t tell if they should just rest him at this point bc he can’t contribute much anyway. But then Naz Reid and Nowell are injured and the rest of the team has the illness too lol. Rough

The shot selection is a bigger reason as to why Minnesota lost to Memphis as opposed to their interior defense. That game where they gained two separate 20 point leads to blow them both and lose is a damning example

OMFG HUGE FUCKING WIN

Beat a hot team on the road, being down 10 at the half.

Because of this win (and counting based on the loss column and tiebreakers) Lakers are:

1 game up on the Pels
1 game up on the Mavs
3 games up on OKC
1 game behind the W's
2 games behind the Clips
1 game up on the Twolves essentially tied with the Twolves, but they own the tiebreaker (looked at standings before they added tonight's finish)

With only 5 games to play. Lakers are basically in the playoffs unless OKC can make up 3 games in the last 5.

97

u/Acceptable-Egg-7495 Apr 01 '23

Crazy that the lakers have just one more loss than both clippers and warriors after the season the lakers have had. This team has been a top 4 team post asb, both based on the eyeball test and record. And that’s while missing Lebron.

174

u/ItsKBS NBA Apr 01 '23

If you finish as a 6th seed you will face the Kings in the 1st round.

If you finish 7th you will first have to win the play in game against the 8th seed, if you win the play in you will face Memphis

If you lose the play in game you will face the winner of the 9 vs 10 seed play in game, if you win this you face the Nuggets and if you lose you are eliminated out of the playoffs.

7

u/Lightning14 Lakers Apr 01 '23

6 or 7 would be ideal. 6th we get Kings. Would be awesome to play Sac again the playoffs. Or 7 (and win at home 1 game play-in) then we get Grizz. Either way, we avoid PHX or DEN until Conference Finals.

Yeah they all have an intestinal virus and Ant was throwing up at halftime and laying in the tunnel whenever he wasn’t in the game. It was rough. KAT didn’t eat all day because when he did he would throw up. Almost the whole team has this dumb illness. Diarrhea, nausea, exhaustion and shit

I give them credit for gutting it out but man it’s horrible timing. They need to get healthy. It’s why they looked so exhausted and off. Can’t tel if they should just rest Ant because he can’t contribute much like this. His ankle is clearly not recovered either.

That second half was amazing to watch. The defense came alive, LeBron shed his woeful 1st half, and everyone contributed. Also, it helps to have an AD in your roster to just give the ball to any time you need a basket.

Finally, I just wanna say Jaden McDaniels is truly special. Not only is his defense terrific, but he was also kinda turning LeBron into BBQ Chicken in the 1st half with his fakes.

13

u/TMNSquirtles007 Apr 01 '23

Lebron looked slow on defense today. Was that because he’s still recovering from his foot injury or he just didn’t have it today?
